A City of Many Saints
The Tour
Know who is the patron Saint of Lisbon? Many Portuguese don’t. Or why are there so many churches in the old town and in Alfama?
Lisbon is a passionate city, and Saints have long had a special place in its heart. Dotted with churches and chapels, it waits for you to tell forgotten stories of devotion, talk about new faiths and rituals and show off its beautiful sanctuaries.
From de ancient Saint Gens and the forgotten Martyr Saints, from the Graça district to Alfama, we explore the Christian city that was conquered to the Muslims and grew around the new temples and convents.
Follow the tradition and ask Saint António for a coin, get to know his life and miracles and learn about all the ways that the people of Lisbon gave to celebrate and even discipline their beloved Saint, born in Lisbon so long ago.
Walking along the hill, hear about a battle against the kingdom of Castile that ended up renaming the city’s castle, and unravel the story of our true patron Saint, whose protective crows became the symbol of Lisbon.
It’s the ideal walk for who visits the city in June, but it will feel good in any time of the year!
